The Japanese cellular market features some very strange offerings and NTT Com is planning to pilot test one of the oddest of all. What if when someone called you could smell them? That is exactly what the service is looking at providing. I’m not sure I’d want to smell the plumber, but calling the bakery and smelling the cookies would be nice.
The service would be a mobile version of an existing service for getting audiovisual content that can be enjoyed with specific fragrances. The mobile version would allow compatible cell phones to download Fragrance Playlists from a site provided by NTT DoCoMo via a phones IR port.
Once downloaded the scent recipe or Fragrance List is sent to a fragrance device loaded with base scents or scent cartridges. The service would allow fragrances to be associated with ringtones, music, or horoscopes. The service could also be tied into the video game market as well. If the pilot service takes off you could be saying smell you later rather than talk to you later when you hang up.
