So what happened yesterday when AbleComm issued a press release stating that Panasonic would be using its small plasma display in an upcoming cell phone for AT&T, only to call the story a flat out falsification a few hours later?
I’m not sure what could have happened, but two things jump to my mind. One the press release that was widely reported around the Internet was simply a marketing ploy to get people to post lots of links to the AbleComm online store, which sells lots of phones and other stuff. That link seemed a bit odd when I looked at the release yesterday, but I chalked it up to a release writer posting the wrong link, which happens more than release writers want to admit.
The second scenario could be that AbleComm jumped the gun on the announcement of the display being used before Panasonic wanted it announced. This is also a plausible theory. In the end we don’t really know anything other than what AbleComm released in response to the original release:
“We are advised by AbleComm, Inc. that journalists and other readers should disregard the news release, Panasonic To Put Plasma Video Displays in Cell Phones, issued earlier today over PR Newswire, as the entire news release is completely false.”
I for one would like to hear from Panasonic on the issue.
